Long Weekend

There comes a time in every kids life when the shoe drops and they suddenly make the connection between meat and animals. Max’s came this weekend as we were strapping him into the back of the car beside the 25 pound turkey. “Is that a REAL turkey?” he gasped. “Did someone go out and catch it?”. We try not to lie to our kids, but we mumbled something about nobody catching that particular turkey, started the engine, and drove off.

Okay, so he figured it out when I was stuffing the thing on Sunday morning. He asked what they did with the head. I said I didn’t know. He said he wasn’t going to eat it ‘cause it was gross. I said that was okay.

We could not have asked for a better weekend. The weather was in the low 20’s 4 days in a row. We crammed in a yard sale and said goodbye to the final bits of furniture and boxes on our third floor. We took a very long hike through the Humber to see the salmon running (while the turkey cooked). I cooked two pumpkin pies, cranberry sauce, a loaf of bread and a whack of root vegetables, salads, etc. and hosted a dinner party for 10. It was a bunch of fun and we will be eating fucking turkey for the next month.

Today I bonded with my daughter with several hours of shopping therapy. Doug got a massive ball-hockey game going on the street with 9 screaming boys. Nobody lost an eye but it was close. I ended the afternoon with a flawless run. We are all tired and tucking in for the night with homework, tv and leftovers. I hope everyone else had a nice long weekend too.

And yes, Max ate the turkey.

I don't remember when I made the connection between animals and meat, but I do remember when I made the connection between the meat on my plate and the specific physical process it went through to get there. I was vegetarian for over 6 months. Broke the fast with a nice thick Porterhouse...

Should you so desire, I'll gladly supply a FedEx call tag and some dry ice. You can send your leftovers my way...

Sick

Custom Kitchen Stuff
I woke up this morning with a burning, sore throat. I knew something was up when I could barely lift my head at 9:00 last night. Despite being ill, I loaded the van and completed the installation of a piece I was commissioned to do - I owe Warren a great big thanks for this one. I know I don't really post my work here, but thought I might throw one in just for a change.

My body is not up for much more than a clean-out of the workshop. The sun is shining and it is stinking hot in the backyard so I can't let this day go to waste in a sickbed. Oh, that and I have to take 6 boys to ball-hockey at 4 pm.

Creatures of Habit

Rubber Band Anyone?
There comes a time in our lives when we suddenly realize we have turned into our parents. Mine was this evening. I was making supper and taking the rubber band off the vegetables. I took the elastic and placed it (with many others) on the faucet on my kitchen sink. It occurred to me that it was something my mother always did. We always knew we could find one on the faucet it we needed one. It made me smile.

I can only be so lucky to turn into either of my parents. I hope you are all that lucky too.

Funny the mostly un-noticed habits we pick up from our parents. To this day I always shake the milk before I pour it. It wasn't until my mother came to visit me once I lived on my own that I realized that I do it because she always did it when I was a child.

Now the actual REASON for the shaking of the milk no longer exists. Modern processing has made the need to mix the cream/milk fat that rose to the top back into the liquid unnecessary.

I'm sure if I try I can think of more just-because-mom-did-it's that I do, but I have a new laptop so I'm going to play.

Fall Colours

Perfect Day
I just had to post this picture, for a couple of reasons. First, fall is my absolute favourite time of year. I have a closet full of sweaters that I now get to pull on every morning, and soon I will be in the workshop watching the snow fall. It is comforting. Secondly, this represents and really great time I had up north with 5 other women just this past weekend. We went for a lovely long hike and the leaves were all just starting to change. When I pulled my camera out, I couldn't believe how perfect the light was falling on the river.

I'm thinking I need another road trip this weekend - the colours will be that much better.

Oh God! Can you say desktop wallpaper? This looks so nice on my computer... Wed 27-Sep-2006 23:20

Freak Show

Horny Toads
Last weekend was the annual Polish Street Festival in our hood. It coincided with Bobo's ball tournament so it was a busy weekend. We took a few hours at the festival. We ate pastries made with lard and the kids went on some rides. It was a sunny, warm fall day so was great to be outdoors with everyone. This year they actually had a freak show. I didn't go in. In was 3 bucks. I remember these things from way back when at the exhibition. The last time I saw one was when I was pregnant with frankie 14 years ago.

It has been a busy, crazy past month. We are keeping our heads above water (just slightly) and now our car is toast. I have decided that we need a mid-life-crisis car. If Doug isn't working, he is sick. If he is not sick, he is recovering. At least if he has a toy to drive to work it might make the rest bearable.

Either that or we get a Lada.

My Peeps

Three Amigos
Well, home yet again with a sick little boy so no time to be in the workshop, rather I shall languish in front of the computer for a half hour.

This is a picture of my three buds G, Mighty Q. and R. We spent basically next to no time together this summer, which kinda bums me out. I think it is time to plan a big, stinking house party and distribute too many jello shots.

My Beauty
I have 13 minutes to kill while I wait for the chocolait chip cookies to come out of the oven so I'm gonna cram in an overdue post. Tuesday is my short work day as I pick up a bunch of Mr. Bobo's friends after school for a play day. Frank is having a chum over also (hence the cookies).

I don't like posting shots of my daughter on the internet now that she looks like a supermodel, but I love this one.... it is one of those rare ones where she didn't put her hand in front of the lens. I took this in NYC this past month. I have more to post, but will do it once I figure out all the ins and outs of my fancy new Mac.

She is my pride and joy, depsite the fact that she is in full-force teenager mode. Sigh.

The beauty of kids at this age is so powerful -- not to them, but to us. My own daughters, ages 14, 12, and 11, are coming to that push dad away, but not too far away, age when they are asserting their independence and are yet fully dependent. It's tough; sometimes it breaks my heart. Tue 5-Dec-2006 16:52

Summer Fun

Sweet, delicious lard
I know I should be posting the kids on their way to school, but i just couldn't resist this photo. It is my favourite for so many reasons. First, these are two of Mr. Bobo's close buddies. We took them to the exhibition a couple of weeks ago and they had a ball. These two little fellows are completely freaked out by trans fats and fast food. They asked for nothing more than bottled water at the fair - freakish, I know. Anyhow, I could not help but introduce them to Tiny Tom Donuts. They took one bite and it was like they skies opened up and all the angles started singing! They ate so many that I'm pretty sure they may have permanent heart damage.... but it was fun.

This is the first posting I've done on my new fancy Mac. I'm still trying to figure some stuff out, but for the most part i LOVE the machine. I'm still working out some email bugs, so if you have not heard from me, be patient.... should be no more than a week away. That includes you too Cowboy Junkie!

I have the worst late-summer head cold. I left work early and have done nothing but eat and nap all afternoon and evening. Now I have a craving for donuts and none in the house...maybe I can drench a bagel in melted butter and sugar. Fri 8-Sep-2006 01:54

Sweet Baby James

Jameson
So yesterday was just pure shit which resulted in no sleep last night. I'm exhausted. I should have spent the day getting organized for NY but just could not focus. I dropped Mr. Bobo off at Union Station so he could spend a couple days at Bungalow Island with Grandma and Grandpa. The rest of the day was spent holding babies. 4 no less! It started with Jameson then I moved on to Oliver, Enicka, and then some other sweet thing whose I abducted from my street. Makes all that bad stuff in life just dissapear doesn't it?

This time tomorrow i'll be cuddling with my sweet girl Frankie in The Big Apple.
