The Best Present Ever

Something Fishy
My little boy woke up this morning and was finally six years old. He has been waiting for this day for weeks and it has been fun. Frankie gave him a very cool present that she made this year. It is a cardboard box with a wire hand crank that is attached to two fish. When you wind the crank the fish move up and down and sideways, like they are swimming. It is pretty special.

I am 45 minutes away from picking up a gaggle of kids at the school for his birthday party. Yes - it will be a zoo. Doug left over an hour ago to get the cake and ballons just a few blocks away. If he stopped for a hooker I will be pissed.

Those hand made gifts are really the best. Can't put my finger on where the store bought gifts I've gotten are, but I have every card and ornament the little guy every made in school.

I do hope hooker is Canadian for "beer"...

I guarantee max's friends are were a whole lot less destructive that yours Murphy. I've seen the damage after one of your partys... (not to mention the internal damage to our bodies?

Don't worry, if a hooker tries to pick up Doug he'll just think thats she's a hot chick and he's looking good that day.

Shop

3 Little Cabinets
See Saw
I'm back in the shop again on a steady basis and loving it. I've taken a little time this past week just to plow through some old wood in the workshop and make some new cabinets. It is such a nice time of the year to be out there, despite the fact the cat keeps tapping on the window every 2 minutes. I bet Santa's little elves are hard at it this time of year too, and busy compiling wish lists.

This year I asked for an 8-ball.

Bobo - again

I'm not sure how much longer he will let me call him that.... he will be six years old in just 2 weeks. This was taken last weekend on a little walk along Cherry Beach. It will probably be one of the last he will do, now that the cold weather is upon us. Frankie got her braces last week so I'm pretty sure she won't be letting me post any recent pics of her. She is still so beautiful - and kind.

Camera just LOVES him, doesn't it? Wed 23-Nov-2005 03:18

Big Tree Falling

Car
Always activity on my street. My neighbour Pat lost her car to a wind storm.

Ouch.

It is called Karma. I made fun of my neighbour's roof and suddenly a big frickin' racoon moves into my attic. The story is too long to tell without a big glass of beer, so I shall let the photos speak for themselves. We named him Geoffrey. He is gone now. We learned that you cannot wack wildlife with a big stick like a pinata.

I miss him.

What exactly was his reaction to the whacking? At my house one good whack with the shovel takes care of the critters, but then none of the ones I'm plagued with are quite the size of old Geoff. Wed 23-Nov-2005 03:17

It's just plain funny

House
Underpants
This is my neighbour's roof. He thought he hired a roofer to fix it, but unfortunately a 4 day job has turned into a month, plus. I know I shouldn't laugh and, honestly, I didn't at first. I didn't even laugh when he got 6 inches of water in his house with the first rain. We have all had those nightmare stories with trades at least once in our lives. Be honest. The unfortunate thing about my neighbours experience is the pure fact that it is happening right out in the street, instead of the privacy of his own home. He told me he actually sees couples walking past and taking the time to stop and point. He wants to yell at them to just go away, but face it, they are drawn to the big blue tarp.

Part of my morning ritual is now to make my latte, fire the kids off the school and check to see if the roofer is there and/or working. He is averaging about three hours a day, and just on the ones where he shows up. It would appear he has now resting his underpants on a big piece of plywood. Kinda makes you wonder what he is really doing up there. Today was garbage/recycling day. I think it was thoughtful of my neighbours to actually bring their trash to the curb, as I just threw mine in their permanant disposal bin.

If this is the same neighbor who flooded your basement with his do-it-yourself garden project, then I'd have to say this couldn't happen to a nicer, more deserving guy... Fri 23-Sep-2005 01:09

No Juli, this is actually the nice neighbour across the street. You're thinking of Homer Simpson, the guy Murphy lives next door to. I think he's busy planting trees right beside his gas and water lines and an extention on the back porch out of recycled tin-foil as we speak. Fri 23-Sep-2005 14:02

...and I thought my story was bad. Quoted 1 1/2 weeks took 7 weeks for a wall and a sliding door and the only thing left behind to pickup those days they showed up, were cigarette butts, coke cans, water bottles, pizza boxes, tons of drywall pieces and dust, aluminum siding, and a backyard full of refuse.....no underwear. But he did do a good job. Fri 23-Sep-2005 18:37

Because Size Matters

Big Glasses
They even have magnets with interchangable lenses
Hectic week, and still dragging a little. I'm looking forward to a weekend of sleep and recuperation (not to mention 2 parties). Had the pleasure of going out the other night to the U2 concert, which was only made better by a great dinner with some fun folks and probably the best seats in the house. I spent most of my wasted youth at various and multiple rock concerts. As I have aged, I enjoy them less and less - therefore have not been to one in a while. This concert reminded me of why I kept a shoe-box full of ripped tickets and concert memorabilia. We entered the stadium just as they were opening with "Vertigo". Amazing. They kept the energy going all night and it was pure heaven. Big fat thank-you to Nick and Eric (despite the fact I didn't come home with a t-shirt).

I just really dig Bono's glasses. I also own a great collection of glasses, but recently have been spending most of my days in my oversized Armani's. They are the biggest glasses in the world and when I wear them everybody makes fun of me. Thankfully, I just don't care what other people think. When they are on my face and I'm walking through the lumber yard, I just feel like a rockstar. Perhaps today I will wear the yellow lenses, just to mix things up a bit.

Garbage

Sink
Sweet Jesus
The one that didn't get away
This was a stellar summer for garbage picking and bargain hunting. Things just appeared to fall out of the sky! One of the first deals of the summer was this $20.00 antique pedestal sink. Mint condition. It now graces my new bathroom. The next was this oil painting of Mary. I found it covered in dirt and dust, piled amoungst some old window frames in a barn in Aberfoyle. It was my date day with Max.

The next was this amazing folk-art fish. I am a bit of a collector of folk art and already own one of this fish, so this was particulary special. Lots more stuff in between

$20.00 harvest table
oak mission-style rocker - garbage
metal swivel bench - garbage
2 gorgeous victorian doors (on seperate occasions I might add) - garbage
east-lake dresser- rescued from a house purge
shabby chic end-table - same rescue
... and the list goes on.

So the next time you go to purchase a piece of crap from Ikea, ask yourself if this is something you can see someone else rescueing from the trash and falling in love with all over again in 30 years. If the answer is no, just walk away.

You are a woman of supurb ambition and taste! Of course, I think that because I am coveting your amazing finds. My wife and I are collectors of high-quality cast-offs and I would say that 2/3 of what we own are trash finds, estate sale bargains, hand-me-downs, etc. We should compare finds sometime! In fact, right now, in the back of my van, is my wife's birthday prestent: a 1940s bicycle, complete with brushed on army green paint and big, thick tires, no seat and no handlebars, and it was in the "FREE" pile at a garage sale! Well, she's getting more nearly free stuff, too. I'm not all that cheap all the time.... Tue 13-Sep-2005 14:07

First Day of School

Frank and Bobo

Bobo
View all 7 photos...
For some reason, the dates on my fotopage are a bit out of wack. Today is actually Tuesday, not Wednesday and I just bustled all the kids out the door to school. It's always a frantic morning. Mr. Bobo wasn't as keen as he could be, and poor Frankie had a sleepness night due to the excitment. Bobo looked like he was ready for a camping trip with his large empty kanpsack. We discovered Dexter (Bobo's best friend), Evan and Lena along the way. Frank took off with all her friends and I suspect I won't see her until next fall.

Doug and I walked home, enjoying the bright morning - somewhat in disbelief of how quickly our kids have grown.

Wow! The picture of the three musketeers is one of the best shots I've seen this year. The way the light falls on them and the way that the shadows make the three girls just pop out of the middle.

FAN-FREAKIN'-TASTIC SHOT

As an aside, I was at Dave Matthews concert last night and the crowd just seemed *so* young, though I suppose most of them had just reached legal drinking age. When did I grow up to be my mother?

Our three daughters, ages 13, 11, and nine, are just so... adultlike? I can remember holding them in one hand, laying on my arm. I am nearly the same age as my father was when I met my wife. THAT really put things into perspective for me recently. Tue 13-Sep-2005 14:11

I think you should sell them now before they become untrainable. Fri 2-Dec-2005 19:56
