My beautiful bloom
I only have one plant in my house because;
a) i'm not a plant person and,
b) i generally just kill them
The one plant that I do have is a Christmas Cactus. It was given to me by Joyce, an elderly neighbour, almost 14 years ago. Joyce was a real plant person. She had a turtle that was 30 years old as well. She was very nurturing. She only parted with this plant as she was moving from her home into a small apartment and could not take everything with her. I accepted it when it was gifted to me so I would always have something to remember her by. The plant was in a 6 inch pot when I got it, and had several blooms. I have tried to care for it all these years, but never once has it bloomed. There was one year when it shed all its leaves (do cactus have leaves?) after a summer in the yard. I was able to bring it back. It is quite large now and rests in a 14 inch pot. I have grown attached to it, despite it's reluctance to give me any flowers in return for my kindness towards it. Well, this week, to my surprise, I discovered one lonely bloom hanging from it. You would have thought we had won the lottery the way we all gathered around it in amazement.
I have learned in my lifetime that sometimes there are things/relationships/battles that are just not worth the effort, but I have also learned that there are also those that are worth it - for that lesson, I am grateful.
